Backup or Feel The Pain
This is one of the most important, yet also one of the most neglected areas of computing. Backing up your data should be at the top of your computer maintenance list, right next to Virus Protection. Without data backup or virus protection, you are running the risk of losing your data. And it will happen, don’t think that you don’t have to worry about it.
 Data loss can happen in many ways. One of the most common causes is physical failure of the media the data is stored on. You probably have everything saved on your PCs hard drive or server drive. Hard drives do not live forever. To quote a friend of mine, “there are only two types of hard drives – the ones that have failed and the ones that will fail.” Yes, normally hard drives will live for years without incident. But eventually they will die. It might happen gradually, by more and more bad clusters accumulating until most of the drive is unusable. Or it might happen suddenly, the hard drive just dies without warning.
Also worth mentioning is data loss through virus attacks. There are plenty of nasty computer viruses out there that will delete files on an infected machine. That’s why Virus Protection is just as important.

Reporting is Key
Close IT Plus and Digital RE have a variety of built in reports as well as the ability to export file data into a spreadsheet format.
 Knowing how many files you have opened for a given period and how many you have closed is key to keeping your finger on the pulse of your business.
Being able to ascertain who is giving you files that are closing verses who is giving you "crap". Being able to analyzing who is making you jump through hoops with few to no actual closings is important in helping you figure out where you should be placing your resources.
A loan officer that is giving you three files a month all of which close is more vital than one that gives you 20 of which maybe only three will ever close. It is obvious where the better place to focus your attention is.
You are able to do forecasting too. By looking back over previous periods you can somewhat predict expected income. For example, you can measure current statistics against previous period statistics for the same time period(monthly, quarterly, etc). Then create a "fudge factor" based on the difference and make your best prediction for the current or future periods. It's not an exact science but you get the picture.

Getting to Know You
Each time we create a newsletter we like to ask a few probing questions to a Close IT Plus or Digital RE user about themselves and which feature(s) they really love.
This month we are speaking with Jon Zinman of Zinman & Associates in NYC, NY.
Q. Can you tell us a litte about yourself such as how long you have been in the business and what your normal duties entail?
A. Zinman & Associates, offers over twenty five years of legal experience to the banking and real estate industries at large. We currently represent our clients’ interest in both state and federal court as our attorneys are admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey, as well as the state of Florida. Our attorneys specialize in a broad range of matters concerning the practice of law concentrating in banking, real estate, real estate financing and transactional work, construction law, mortgage, UCC and mechanic lien foreclosure and general commercial litigation. Representational clients include Bank of America, Citibank, NA, Wells Fargo Bank, NA, and many other commercial, prime and sub-prime lenders.
Q. How long have you been using Close IT Plus or Digital RE?
A. We have been using Close IT Plus for over a year now. Close IT Plus is the most comprehensive, intuitive program for the banking industry. This program is the complete companion to our business as it automates our process from the intake of new files to the preparation, closing and post closing review of each transaction. This program is so inclusive and user friendly that it is hard to pick one feature that outshines any other. I am particularly impressed with the ease of preparing HUD statements and how it calculates all the taxes in the various counties, each with its own tax rate. I further appreciate the automated 1099 electronic filing feature as it now takes less than 30 minutes for work that used to take 2 to 3 days.
Q. Is there any feature that you can't live without?
A. If there is a feature that I just can’t live without, its REMMIS’ technical support. I have never owned a program where the company is so “hands on.” If we ever have a problem, a REMMIS technician is always just a phone call away and the issue is usually resolved over the phone. The most impressive feature about this program is the updates. REMMIS takes the suggestions of its users in formulating updates and documents and shares them with all Close IT Plus subscribers. This way, I feel part of a REMMIS community. I get a vicarious sense of satisfaction when a suggestion I gave makes its way into the program and shared with others.
